Top Ten Tuesday | Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book

Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Please note that 10 is just a starting number. You can post however many books you want or less!

This weeks topic is: “Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book”

I’m honestly not sure if I have 10 things that instantly make me want to read a book but there are a few things!

  1. Cover: I love a book with a beautiful cover. I know it’s horrible to judge a book by it’s cover but I love to have pretty things on my shelf :3
  2. Beloved Author: If a book is written by an author that I love, I will automatically buy the book… whether the synopsis sounds good or not. Laurie Halse Anderson is my number one auto-buy author :3
  3. Hype: Not always, but sometimes if a book is really hyped, I get interested into seeing why the book is so hyped to begin with.
  4. Friends: If a friend really likes a book I’ll sometimes look into also reading it. This happens a lot if we have the same taste in books. 🙂
  5. Synopsis: I do love a book with a good selling synopsis. If the book doesn’t sound interesting via the synopsis I usually won’t pick up the book. Which probably means I’m missing out on a lot of good books, but a synopsis is so important!

Why I love Luna Lovegood

For those closest to me, it’s no surprise that Luna Lovegood is my all time favorite Harry Potter character. Neville definitely comes in a close second. When I get talking to someone about HP, they always ask “who’s your favorite character?”. The answer is easy, “Luna!” But then they ask that dreaded question: “why?” I never knew how to explain why I love her. After much pondering, I’ve come up with a few reasons…

Luna is such a unique character. I honestly don’t know how to explain her personality besides being super quirky. She doesn’t seem to care that much about what people think of her. She wears clothes that make her stand out such has that glorious lions head she wore that one time at a quidditch game! XD

I think she’s a super loyal friend. She always seemed to be there for Harry and the rest of the gang. For example, she was there for Harry when he saw the Thestrals for the first time. She was empathic and explained that she, too, could see them. Or when Harry said that Dumbledore was back… Luna was one of the first people to stand up and tell him she believed he was telling the truth.

She believes in all creatures, much like Hagrid. Even if people call her crazy and laugh at her, she still stands for what she believes in. I think she would have gotten along fantastic with Newt from Fantastic Beasts because I know he’d believe her about all of the creatures she believes in :3

Overall, Luna is fantastic. She’s the kind of friend I want to have. She’s cute and adorable. She’ll be there to support you. She won’t think your views are crazy. She’ll stand up for you. And she’s very bloody smart. ❤

Who’s your favorite Harry Potter character? Why?

March Wrap-up

Stats for February’s Reading
Favorite Book: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Least Favorite Book: Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Total Pages Read: 1,849
Average Rating: 4/5

Books I read in January:

Witch’s Pyre (#3) by Josephine Angelini- 4/5 (Goodreads)
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire- 3/5 (Goodreads)
Tiger’s Quest (#2) by Colleen Houck- 4/5 (Goodreads)
The Shadow Hour (#2) by Melissa Grey- 4/5 (Goodreads)
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas- 5/5 (Goodreads)

Thoughts on the books I read
I read a lot of sequels in the month of March. I was really disappointed in Every Heart a Doorway. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting, but I wasn’t fond of the story. It was decent but I felt like there were too many plot holes or something. I adored Witch’s Pyre. Highly recommend Josephine’s Starcrossed trilogy as well. Tiger’s Quest was a reread for me. I loved that book more the second time around. The series is so, so, so good. It was a huge reason I got into tiger’s. It’s one of my favorites. WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO READ THRONE OF GLASS!? I told my friend I kind of wanted to read it but wasn’t sure so we read it together and my god was it fantastic. I’ll be writing a review hopefully soon! 🙂

Personal favorite things that happened

  • March has been super busy. I got a house and just moved in on April 1st. I had to get everything set up money wise and start packing so I didn’t have time to read or blog. The house is going good so far. I feel like it’s made my boyfriend and I a lot closer because I had a horrible anxiety attack the other day. I’ve also been crying a lot because the new house is flooding so I’m stressed and my boyfriend has been supporting me emotionally. ❤
  • On top of the new house, I also had a few interviews in March. AND I GOT THE JOB! It’s a hired Unit Aid position at this rehab place and they pay for you to go to CNA school then after you get your state certification, they hire you in automatically as a CNA 🙂 I’m excited and super nervous because what if I don’t like it?
  • I reached 100 followers on my blog! Thank you all so, so, sooo much. I really appreciate you guys liking what I have to say ❤

How as your March been? Sorry I have’t been blogging for almost a month. Life just got hectic and everything happened at once and it all happened so fast. All good things tho :3

Where Have I Been?

Hello everyone!

It’s been a wee bit since I’ve blogged or blog hopped or even commented on blogs that I follow. I just became beyond busy lately. Since I’ve been gone a little bit, I thought I’d let everyone know what I’ve been up to because it’s all super exciting news! 😀

I was recently suppose to start back up school for a CNA program but the class got cancelled, again.*queue eye roll* After the class got cancelled, I was looking at jobs on the website for the hospital I work at. I saw that they had a paid CNA starter program for full-time. I figured it didn’t hurt to apply so I did and now I have a phone interview for it on Monday! I’m super nervous.

On top of this exciting news, my boyfriend, I, and two of my boyfriends friends have been looking around for a house to rent. We found one we really liked and put a security deposit down. WE OFFICIALLY HAVE A HOUSE!  It sounds like we’re moving in April 1st! However, all three guys are in the National Guard and will be gone that weekend, so I can mostly just move in boxes and such. We won’t have internet and all of that set up until the guys get back. But I’m beyond excited.

It’s like when one door closes, two more fantastic doors open. It’s going to be weird not living at home. It’s also nerve racking moving in with my boyfriend. We’ve been together for a year, but this is a big step and a big commitment. It’s going to be interesting.

So I’ve been super busy. I’m also reading a book with a friend and working on top of everything that I really haven’t had much time to blog. So thank you to everyone that’s been patient with me 😀

You’re Not Good Enough | Book Tag

sweettreats-comI saw this tag and thought it looked like so much fun!  This tag was originally created by Readlikewildfire and Beccathebookreviewer. It involves 15 scenarios and two random characters will be picked from a jar (or random generator) for each scenario. Then the most suitable character will be chosen to fit the scenario. Hopefully, that makes sense and if not it should become clearer as you start reading.

Let’s begin!

1. You only have one more spot on your Spelling B team, who would
you pick to complete your team?

Richard Gansey iii or Katniss Everdeen?

Honestly, I feel like Gansey would be a better fit on my spelling B team. He seems a little bit more calm. Katniss on the other hand reminds me of someone that’s really competitive and doesn’t like to lose.

the-lightning-thief2. Both characters want to kill you, which one would you kill first so you have a better chance of surviving?

Percy Jackson or Wesley Rush?

I don’t want to hurt either character. However, I’d probably have to kill Percy Jackson simply because he knows how to fight and such. Plus he’s had lots of practice killing monsters, yikes. I think Wesley Rush is too much of a pretty boy to do much killing. So I don’t think he’d kill me even if he wanted me dead. :3

3. You’re on the bachelor/bachelorette an you’re down to these two characters, which one are you going to give your rose too?

Augustus Waters or Hazel Grace?

What cruel world is this? HOW DID THE RANDOM GENERATOR PUT THESE TWO TOGETHER!? I have to go with Augustus Waters. Augustus is perfect in every single way possible. My God I love him.

4. You’ve been chosen for the Hunger Games, who would most likely volunteer in your place?

Kaz Becker or Luna Lovegood?

I’m going to have to go with Kaz. He’s more use to getting his hands dirty and he knows how to get what he wants. Plus, even though he doesn’t like to admit it, he does have a secret caring side to him. 🙂

132067605. You’re stranded on an island. Which character would you sacrifice to engage in cannibalism?

Rowan Fall or Carswell Thorne?

What kind of cruel, awful world is this? I love both of these characters so much. As much as I’d love to be stranded on an island with Captain Throne and all of his witty humor, I have to go with Rowan Fall. He knows how to survive in the wilderness. Plus he can heal things and knows whats safe and not safe to eat. I have to go with him. ❤

6. You’re the next DC/Marvel superhero (with your own tv show of course), who is your sidekick?

Tobias Eaton or Wylan Van Eck?

As much as I would love to say Tobias, I feel like Tobias makes a better hero than a sidekick. So I’m going with Wylan because Wylan makes a hilarious sidekick in the Six of Crows duology. I’m sure if I felt like crap for messing something up, Wylan would have a cute hilarious comeback to make me smile.

acomaf-uk-coveri_am_number_four_cover7. You’re a manager of an Avocado admiring company, who would you fire for lack of communication skills?

John Smith or Rhysand?

As much as I love both characters, I think Rhysand would make a better worker. Plus I think he’s better with words and charming people. I’m sorry John Smith, but you’re going to have to stay to killing aliens instead of selling silly avocados!

cinder160968248. You’ve just finished a book in which your favorite character dies, which character is most likely to comfort you?

Linh Cinder or Feyre Archeron?

I think Cinder would be more likely to comfort me simply because I don’t think Feyre would be fully out of her misery yet. That and there’s no time to comfort in Feyre’s world. Neither Cinder’s really but I can see Cinder being more of the caring girl for someone that’s upset.

51ysudc9-rl9. Ugh, it’s high school. Who would most likely be part of the popthe_maze_runner_coverular clique?

Ashallyn Darkmyr Tallyn (Ash) or Thomas?

Lmao, this is hilarious. I feel like both of these characters are kind of loners. Ash is definitely more attractive so I think all the girls would be obsessed with him, but he gives off a very cold persona. Although Thomas seems like a loner in a way, he’s better at making friends. He’s way more outgoing so I can see him being part of the popular clique.

i_am_number_four_coverhappymargo10. The day has arrived; you’re finally a year older! Who would have the nerve to forget your birthday?

Nine or Margo Roth Spiegelman?

I think Nine would forget my birthday more than Margo. Nine’s mind is always running with anything and everything that I don’t blame him for forgetting. Margo would probably forget it to though… but I think she’d eventually remember sometime that day.

41865perksofbeingwallflower111. You’ve just found an upcoming booktube star? Who would most likely be?

Charlie Kelmeckis or Edward Cullen?

Well… they’re both readers. I feel like Edward would read more old literature though… like books that no one is really interested in reading. Plus he’s been around a long time that I think he’d find booktube to be boring. Charlie on the other hand… I can see him making videos so he doesn’t feel so alone. I think he’d be really good at talking about books.

51eiqkgnnpl-_sx331_bo1204203200_12. Sleepover time! Unfortunately you can only invite one person,51ysudc9-rlwho would you invite?

Lucas Delos or Robin Goodfellow (Puck)?

Why are this questions so flipping hard to answer!? As much as I love Lucas, I’d have to say Puck from The Iron Fey series. Puck is freaking hilarious. I feel like if he were to spend the night with me, we’d end up having a lot of mischief.

97816277921278775201413. Bam, you’re pregnant. Who’s the father/mother?

Inej Ghafa or Alagan Dhiren Rajaram (Ren)?

As cool as Inej is, I’m not into girls. Plus I have a mega crush on Ren. He’s the whole reason I fell in love with tigers and the whole reason that tigers became my favorite animal. Ren would be the most perfect father but also perfect husband and family man. He protects those he cares about and is willing to do anything he can to protect them. Gah, he’s perfect.

7219314. You’ve just written a super important text. Who would ‘see’ it, but not reply?

Harry Potter or Echo?

I think Harry would be the one to see it but not reply. Harry get’s distracted very easily, especially when he’s getting into trouble with Ron. Echo on the other hand, she seems to love to talk. I love her for it. I can picture her getting mad at someone for not replying to her text messages XD

city_of_bones7219315. You’ve just woken up and it’s time for breakfast. Your mum’s been replaced by..who?!

Clary Fray or Hermione Granger?

I’d be sad if my mom disappeared, but it would be pretty freaking sweet is Hermione was my mom. She’s perfect and smart and lovely. I absolutely hate Clary. She annoys me so much. So I’d be pretty stoked to have Hermione in my life XD

Book Thoughts: The Raven Boys

Series: The Raven Cycle
Published by: Scholastic
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult
Pages: 408
Source: paperback, bought
Rating: ✬✬✬

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Favorite Quote

“As Adam stared at his lap, penitent, he mused that there was something musical about Ronan when he swore a careful and loving precision to the way he fit the words together, a black-painted poetry. It was far less hateful sounding than when he didn’t swear.”

Oh man. The Raven Boys was definitely an interesting story. The only word I think describes this book best is the word “weird”. I don’t know why but the only thing I could think was “omg this book is so weirddddd….” I thought the book had a very slow start. The synopsis also doesn’t do a good job explaining what the book is about. The synopsis almost seems to focus on love and relationships and neither are really present in the story.

I thought the writing was meh but also confusing and choppy. There were a few times I had to reread a paragraph or two several times and even then I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Not only that but there were some sentences that are repetitive wording, which got sooo old. For example “The water was clear, clear, clear.” The water is clear. We get it. No need to tell us two more times.

There is a “romance” in the story but I found it to be incredibly dull and boring. There was literally no chemistry. It was like “Hey you’re cute… let’s hold hands and no really talk too much.” *eye roll*.

I wasn’t super into the character in the beginning either. I didn’t start to really like them until may page 130 maybe a little sooner. I don’t what it was but they started to grow on me. I really love Gansey. He tries so hard to be there for his friends and to take care of them. Ronan was my next favorite. There’s something about his character that just oozes anger and I could feel it coming off him through the pages.

After the characters started growing on me, the story started to grow on me. Some exciting plot twists started happening. However, I wasn’t sold on the ending. I don’t think the ending was really planned out too well. Something happens to a character that changes them in a way, and the other characters are just like “lol whatever” and then the book ends. I am interested in seeing where the story goes, but I’m not dying to. So I may eventually rent the books from the library. Not 100% yet.

Have you read the series? Thoughts?

Why are reviews so hard to write!?

I just recently read a blog post by Becky @ A Fool’s Ingenuity where she talked about tips for people who think their reviews are getting too repetitive. After reading, I started thinking about my own book reviews and how they really are repetitive.

I started thinking that maybe this is why I despise writing book reviews. My book reviews were always the same: “this book was amazing”, “the writing was brilliant”, “the characters were dull”. Because of this, I ended up changing my “book reviews” to “book thoughts” simply because I didn’t feel like I was truly reviewing the book, just explaining my thoughts on the book.

Then upon further thinking, I realized that I never really explain why a book is good or the writing brilliant or the characters dull. I do keep a notebook to write down all of my thoughts, but when I sit down to write a review I can never think of what to say. I end up writing my bulletin points down, but the thoughts are usually so jumbled and I never know how to organize my thoughts into a “proper” review.

Because of this, I get stressed out writing. I want to write quality stuff but I feel like my reviews are lacking. I need to find a better way to express myself in words that people are interested in reading.

Lets discuss: How do you guys like to do your reviews? Do you make categories such as the follow: writing, characters, plot? Do you have a preference on reading certain review layouts? Any advice? Do you struggle with writing reviews as well?

Book Thoughts: Pivot Point Duology by Kasie West

This duology is about a girl that can see the future between two choices. For example, if she has a choice between moving to a new place or staying where she is, she can see the outcome of both choices. There is also a cute little love thrown in. 😉

Pivot Point thoughts:
I loved both love interests in the first book from the very start. They both brought something special to the story.  Plus they were both freaking hilarious. It was a fun read and pretty fast paced. I really enjoyed reading the chapters that took place at Addie’s moms the most. I won’t say why because of spoilers, but I think those chapters were the most fun…. until I got to know more about the people in the other chapters that involved Addie’s dad… I was a little sad over Addie’s choice in Pivot Point for some reason, but Split Second made up for it. Overall, Kasie West is for sure turning into a new favorite author. Way to go Kasie 😀

Split Second thoughts:
Again, I really loved the characters. Plus we get a few new characters introduced that I feel in love with. The characters are freaking hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing out loud. Especially at work… I think my coworkers thought I was crazy. The book was super intense and mysterious. I loved Addie’s character because she was so sarcastic and had a cute spunk to her. Plus the ending was fantastic. I highly recommend these books 😀

February Wrap-Up || 2017

Stats for February’s Reading
Favorite Book: Split Second (#2) by Kasie West
Least Favorite Book: Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Total Pages Read: 2,606
Average Rating: 3.7/5

Books I read in January:

Heartless by Marissa Meyer- 3/5 (Goodreads)
Pivot Point (#1) by Kasie West- 4/5 (Goodreads)
Splint Second (#2) by Kasie West- 5/5 (Goodreads)
Paranormalcy by Kiersten White-3/5 (Goodreads)
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater- 3/5 (Goodreads)
Trial by Fire (#1) by Josephine Angelini- 4/5 (Goodreads)
Firewalker (#2) by Josephine Angelini- 4/5 (Goodreads)

Thoughts on the books I read
I think the Pivot Point duology by Kasie West was by far my favorite books I read this month. The books were cute and freaking hilarious. I needed more Trevor Heartless was probably my least favorite read simply because I was so disappointed. I was disappointed because I freaking adore the Lunar Chronicles. Paranormalcy was an okay read. It was fun but just…weird. There wasn’t much to the story. The Raven Boys was also a weird freaking book. I don’t know what I was expecting from the book, but it sure wasn’t what happened in it. Lastly, I read the first two books in the Firewalker trilogy by Josephine Angelini. This trilogy so far is also disappointing because I loved her Starcrossed trilogy so much. ❤

Personal favorite things that happened

  • My boyfriend gave me the best Valentine’s Day. He made a fantastic fish and salad dinner.
  • Awhile ago, I was complaining to my boyfriend that I bought the old cover to the last Percy Jackson book off of Book Depository but they sent me the new cover instead. I was upset that it didn’t match my covers. So what did my boyfriend do? He bought me the last Percy Jackson book in the old cover. He bought the hardback though and my series in paperback so it still doesn’t match, but it’s the thought that counts 🙂
  • I started second shift again. I work 3pm-11pm and so far I like it!

Stacking My Bookshelves… Again…

Hello everyone! Long time no talk. I know. It makes me sad. I’ve just been in a huge reading mood lately. I don’t want to do anything but read. So that’s what I’ve been doing… well, reading and neglecting my blog… However, I have acquired some new books recently! 🙂

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard || I’ve heard great things about this book. I don’t know too much about it besides it being about witches, but I’ve been super into fantasy lately. I’m super excited to read it 😀

The Book Jumper by Mechthild Gläser || I think book was originally in German? I don’t know but it’s about a girl that can jump into other books. It reminds me of Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, but this book still seems cute!

Scythe by Neal Shusterman || Long ago, I read a book called Bruiser by Neal and absolutely loved it. Ever since then I’ve wanted to test out more of his books. Scythe is a violent book about ending people’s lives to keep the population from overflowing. It sounds sooo good!

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken || Honestly, the only reason I bought this book because Sarah J. Maas has a quote on the cover raving about this book. But the book also sounds pretty interesting… except I don’t remember too much about it, tehe.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber || I keep seeing “Carnival” every time I look at the cover of this book. I can’t full explain what the book is about it but it sounds soooo good. I’m super excited to read it 😀

The Shadow Hour (#2) by Melissa Grey || I read The Girl At Midnight by Melissa (book 1) last year with a friend and loveeeeeed it. It’s about magic but it was hilarious. I’m so excited to read the second book with my friend! Highly recommend the trilogy.

The Last Olympian (#5)  by Rick Riordan || Once upon a time, I had books 1-4 of Percy Jackson. I still needed the 5th book so I bought the paperback off Book Depository. The picture was of the old Percy Jackson covers (so that’s what I assumed I was getting). Instead, BD ended up sending me the new Percy Jackson cover so the final book didn’t match the rest of the books ): I ended up complaining to my boyfriend about it so what did he do? HE BOUGHT ME THE OLD PERCY JACKSON BOOK COVER. It’s in hardback so it still doesn’t match my paperback series but it was the thought that counts. And for that, I am forever grateful 🙂
